Indian badminton team at Sudirman Cup 2023: Results, scores and points table
The Sudirman Cup 2023 badminton tournament saw 16 top nations compete. India failed to progress beyond Group C.
A 13-member Indian badminton team, spearheaded by PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth, failed to make the quarter-finals at the Sudirman Cup 2023, being held at Suzhou, China, from May 14 to 21.
Considered the premiere mixed team championship in the world, the Sudirman Cup has been running since 1989 and attracts the top badminton-playing nations from across the globe.A total of 16 teams, including hosts and record 12-time champions China, are competing at the ongoing tournament, which is also the 18th edition of the biennial meet.
The teams were divided into four groups - A to D.
Group A: China, Denmark, Singapore, Egypt
Group B: Indonesia, Thailand, Germany, Canada
Group C: Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, India, Australia
Group D: Japan, South Korea, France, England
Teams in each group faced each other in a round-robin format. After all group ties are done, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
Like most team championships, each tie at the Sudirman Cup 2023 comprise five individual matches - one women’s singles, one men’s singles, one mixed doubles, one women’s doubles and one men’s doubles. The team which wins three of these five matches takes the tie and pockets one point.
India were in a tough Group C alongside Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and Australia. The Indian badminton team started its campaign with a loss against the Chinese Taipei on May 14 and were blanked by Malaysia in the second match. India beat Australia 4-1 in their last tie but it wasn't enough to advance them beyond the group stage.
The Indian badminton team has never won a medal at the Sudirman Cup.
The Sudirman Cup 2023 also kickstarted the badminton qualification window for the Paris 2024 Olympics and points earned at the tournament will count towards the players' Road to Paris rankings.
